Bariatric surgery is now covered by insurance for Pennsylvania state employees, although coverage is limited to those with a body mass index of 40 or more with type 2 diabetes, and they are required to participate in a physician-supervised nutrition and exercise program for a minimum of 6 months prior to surgery. “While there’s still work to do to make access to bariatric surgery less restrictive, this is a very important step in the right direction, and hopefully a signal to the handful of states that still deny bariatric surgery to reconsider their policies,” said Samer Mattar, MD, president of the American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery, in a statement. The first-ever clinical practice guideline was issued for using CYP2D6 genotype to guide hormonal tamoxifen therapy. “The consensus of the consortium tamoxifen group was that there was sufficient evidence to use CYP2D6 genotype to assist with clinical recommendations for women who are being considered for tamoxifen for early stage estrogen receptor positive breast cancer,” stated lead author Matthew Goetz, MD, of the Mayo Clinic in a statement.
